Sports Premium

At Springfield, we know that all children are entitled to an excellent physical education and we believe that all children can develop the competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.

We understand the importance of a well-structured and ambitious PE curriculum, supported by carefully planned use of the Sports Premium funding, in promoting life-long habits of physical activity with the potential to positively impact our children’s long term physical and mental health and wellbeing. Our vision for physical education at Springfield is to engage and inspire pupils to develop both a love of being physically active and a confidence and competence to participate in a range of challenging physical activities.

Our Aims

We aim to:

  • Develop confidence, skills and knowledge for all members of our school community
  • Encourage children to be proud of their achievements
  • Promote fair play and respect
  • Educate children to improve health and wellbeing
  • Provide quality opportunities for children both inside and outside of school

Key Indicators

We are seeking to continuously improve in three key areas:

  1. Engage all pupils in regular physical activity
  2. Provide a rich offer of sporting activities so that all children develop an enjoyment of physical activity
  3. Ensure equity of access to all sports for all children

Our Priorities for 2025-26

For the year 2025-26, our aims are:

  1. To sustain high quality of PE and Games provision
  2. To broaden the sporting opportunities available to all pupils, with a particular emphasis on our after-school enrichment offer
  3. To promote a love of physical activity through high quality play and sports provision at play and lunch times
  4. To continue to increase the number of children in KS2 who learn to swim confidently by the end of primary school

Recent Achievements

Springfield Community Primary School was graded Outstanding by Ofsted in October 2023. The report highlighted: ‘The school makes excellent use of the outdoor facilities. Pupils have regular opportunities for outdoor learning and play. This includes the school ‘forest’, where children from Nursery upwards explore the natural world and learn about the changing seasons. Pupils extend their learning across all subjects through a rich programme of activities, including cooking and gardening clubs’.

Staff involved in teaching PE are well qualified. An experienced PE Teacher leads on PE and the quality of teaching is high. The quality of teaching is monitored and CPD has ensured that it continues to improve.

A range of after-school and morning clubs are focused on increasing physical activity. The number of children participating in these clubs has increased. The school invested heavily in CPD, including training our Sports Coach to become a Forest School leader. This has enabled us to increase the amount of time children are engaged in active, outdoor learning.

How We’re Using the Sports Premium

For the academic year 2025-26, we have been allocated £17,740 in Sports Premium funding. We are investing this funding across four key areas:

1. Sustaining High Quality PE and Games Provision

We are relaunching our outdoor learning curriculum for KS2 and continuing to enhance the cardiovascular workout element in PE lessons to address fitness and stamina, ensuring all children are supported to get out of breath. We’re promoting walking, cycling and scooting to school through engagement with Living Streets WOW initiative, and broadening lunchtime activities to include a wider range of choices such as skipping, speed bounce, and circuits, led by Y6 sports leaders.

2. Broadening Sporting Opportunities

We continue to subsidise clubs which will develop fitness levels for disadvantaged families and those with more than one child. We’re drawing on expertise from the staff team to widen provision of clubs to include sports such as cycling and boxing, and providing vulnerable pupils with places in half term and summer sports camp run onsite at Springfield by On the Ball.

3. Promoting Active Play

We’re providing training for all staff to encourage active play during break times and lunchtimes, purchasing high quality equipment for playtimes to ensure all playtimes are well resourced for all children to participate in physical activities, and further enhancing staff members’ understanding of how best to support in the playground in line with our whole-school play strategy.

4. Swimming Provision

We continue to engage with Better’s 2-week daily intensive swimming lesson model for Years 4, 5 and 6, and continue awareness-raising with families of the importance of swimming as a potentially life-saving skill, as well as an enjoyable form of physical exercise with positive wellbeing effects.

Expected Outcomes

Through these investments, we expect to see:

  • Increased fitness levels for all children
  • Children understanding the link between physical activity and their wellbeing
  • All or most children (Reception to Year 6) taking part in at least one after-school club that develops fitness levels
  • All children positively engaging with a rich play offer
  • Children feeling confident in their ability to make choices, problem solve and be active
